Strong showing at MEDICA 2009

11 January 2010

Giltech, world leader in the field of controlled delivery and biodegradable technologies, had a very successful first appearance at MEDICA, the leading global exhibition for the medical sector, in November.

Particular interest was shown in the company’s SilverLine device which is clinically proven to reduce Indwelling Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) by 53%.

SilverLine contains a small ingot of CorGlaes® Ag, a powerful silver ion antimicrobial agent. When placed in-situ between the catheter and urine drainage system, SilverLine releases a constant supply of silver ions to inhibit the growth of bacteria and prevent the formation of biofilms.

With 25 years of expertise, Giltech’s technologies have been used in pioneering and market-leading wound care products including Sorbsan® and Arglaes®.   Other Giltech products in the medical sector include topical wound care powders and incise drapes.

Giltech’s CorGlaes® technology platform is based on a glass chemistry which Giltech can uniquely and individually formulate for any application. The sodium calcium phosphate glass dissolves completely and harmlessly in an aqueous environment, ideal for biodegradable implants or as a controlled delivery system.

When CorGlaes® is combined with silver ions it provides an effective mechanism for the constant and controlled supply of silver ions to provide an antimicrobial barrier to infection and cross contamination.  This renders products using CorGlaes® Ag extremely effective against Healthcare Acquired Infections (HAIs) including the superbugs MRSA and C.difficile.

Gillian Watson, Managing Director of Giltech said: “We were very pleased with the outcomes of MEDICA. During the show we were able to meet with a number of companies from around the world to discuss how we can work to enhance their products and help satisfy the demands from their customers for high quality, safe and effective applications. We were delighted that so many people were interested in the many benefits of using our SilverLine device to help in the fight against CAUTI and discussions are ongoing.”
